Overclocking

Disclaimer: Overclocking is never guaranteed, so that the results may vary depending on certain conditions and various hardware configurations. I am not recommending overclocking if you do not know what you are doing. High voltages may damage hardware, and the warranty will not cover it.

Overclocking tests were performed on the MSI X570 Unify motherboard, so the same as in all other tests in this article. There are better motherboards for memory overclocking, but it’s still one of the best and isn’t limiting our memory as much as the memory controller in the Ryzen 9 5900X processor.

On our setup, I set fully stable DDR4-3733 CL14-17-15-32 at 1.45V at a 1:1 ratio with the infinity fabric. This is the optimal setting for most AMD Ryzen setups. Our processor couldn’t run without issues at DDR4-3800 or higher, but some users are lucky enough to be able to set up to DDR4-4000. If we have a Ryzen 4000 series processor, we can count on even DDR4-4400+ with a 1:1 infinity fabric ratio, which you could see in our previous Ballistix MAX review.

The maximum memory clock possible in the stability test was DDR4-4800 at quite tight timings of CL18-21-20-36 and 1.50V. The memory could boot higher, but clearly memory controller isn’t the best and was causing problems at DDR4-4866+. The same memory should run without issues at DDR4-5200+ with Ryzen 4000 or really strong memory controllers in the Ryzen 5000 processors.
